Social Initiatives

The 2010 Olympics are the first in history to make sustainability a guiding value and objective in all aspects of the event. For the More Than Gold Network, sustainability resonates with a more profound spiritual call. There are three Sustainability Initiatives that seek to focus on engaging local communities: organizations and churches, in existing initiatives and education.

Sex Trafficking - partnering with REED

The Olympics attracted thousands of spectators to Vancouver, raising concern that organized criminals may traffic women to keep up with demand for paid sex. Buying Sex is NOT a Sport is a grassroots campaign to raise awareness and effect change around sex trafficking, the Olympics and after the Olympics.  It is also a fight for the dignity and freedom of women, children and men. Consider how you can be part of a positive solution to sexual exploitation.  GET INVOVLED! Join in this campaign to spread the message broadly - through community-based public forums, postering campaigns, promotional materials, and a website.

Homelessness / Affordable Housing - partnering with Shalom Seekers

For many, sustainability resonates with the more profound call to shalom, which is the shared experience of holistic well-being which emerges when we are in right relationship with Creator, each other, and the environment around us. An integral aspect of shalom is justice and mercy for our most vulnerable neighbours. When we empower them to discover and release their natural potential into mainstream society, we all will be transformed. Poverty, like the city itself, is a dense web of mutually reinforcing factors; reducing poverty and increasing the well being of the city requires the concerted effort of a wide variety of people and professions.

Creation Care - partnering with A Rocha

Environmental issues and poverty are inextricably linked. People living in poverty, globally and locally, are impacted the most by environmental degradation and climate change. Access to clean water and healthy ecosystems are essential, particularly for those living in the global south. Our big footprint life styles increasingly impact the poorest among us.  There are lots of ways to take action - the bring change, transformation, restoration, and hope.
